How Author Visits Help Students Discover Their Reading Superpower
Compartir
When I visit a school, I'm not thinking about book sales.
I'm thinking about that one student sitting quietly in the back of the room… the one who hasn't found their book yet.
Because once they do—everything changes.
It Starts With a Simple Truth
Every child has a reading superpower.
Not every child loves the same books.
Not every child reads at the same level.
Not every child connects with reading in the same way.
But every child has a story that sparks their imagination.
That's where a lifelong love of reading begins.
What Schools Really Need Right Now
Schools don't need another presentation about reading levels or test scores.
They need moments.
Moments where:
- A student laughs during a story.
- A child realizes they can create their own ideas.
- A reluctant reader says, "That book was actually fun."
Those moments become habits.
Those habits become confident readers.
The Curly Crow Approach
Every Curly Crow author visit is built around one simple goal:
Help children discover their reading superpower.
Not force reading.
Not assign reading.
But inspire children to see reading as an adventure they want to experience.
Through interactive storytelling, humor, questions, and imagination, students discover that books aren't just something they read—they're places they can explore.
The Reading Superpowers Kids Discover
During every visit, students learn that reading develops strengths they can use both inside and outside the classroom.
🟡 Imagination
"I can turn words into pictures in my mind."
🔵 Focus
"I can train my brain to stay with a story."
🟢 Confidence
"I can keep trying, even when reading feels challenging."
🔴 Curiosity
"I ask questions and want to discover more."
🟣 Creativity
"I can imagine and create stories of my own."
🟠 Courage
"I'm willing to try a new book or explore a new idea."
These aren't just reading skills.
They're life skills that continue to grow with every story a child reads.
Why This Works
When children see reading as part of who they are instead of something they're required to do, everything changes.
Instead of saying,
"I have to read."
They begin saying,
"I want to find another great book."
That's the difference between compliance and curiosity.
And curiosity creates lifelong readers.
It's Not About Being the Best Reader
One of the most important things I tell students is this:
You don't have to be the best reader in your class to love books.
You simply have to find the stories that make you excited to keep reading.
The goal isn't perfection.
The goal is discovering the joy of reading.
What Happens After the Visit
The presentation is only the beginning.
After an author visit, teachers often see students:
- Drawing their own characters.
- Asking more thoughtful questions.
- Choosing books more confidently.
- Sharing stories with classmates.
- Becoming excited about reading and writing.
Sometimes, a student even starts writing their very first story.
That's when you know something special happened.
A Message for Schools and Educators
When you invite an author into your school, you're doing more than scheduling an assembly.
You're showing students that:
- Their ideas matter.
- Their creativity matters.
- Their voice matters.
Most importantly, you're showing them that reading can become something they enjoy—not simply another assignment.
